The Vibrato Recital took place on Sunday April 19th. The event was coordinated by Daryl Sue Caplan and hosted by Don Foy at Truro Anglican Church in Fairfax, VA.
Michelle Powell, AMSF President, gave our members two musical challenges for this season: to invite a friend or family member to a program, and to learn a piece different from one’s normal repertoire. This recital ticked all the boxes.
With only six members performing, the program highlighted a variety of styles from classical to contemporary and featured the works of three living composers.
Mary Lewers, flute, researched repertoire that would extend beyond her usual woodwind ensemble to include a rare flute, violin and viola trio by Beethoven.
Ron Planting, both a performer and composer, treated us to a performance of his original composition “Lyric Intermezzo for Unaccompanied Viola.” This was a winning entry in the American String Teachers Association 75th Anniversary Composition Competition (2021).
Carolyn Lincoln, violin, programmed medleys of Celtic tunes and American Spirituals for string trio arranged by local composer David Rodda. In retirement, David is a serious student of music composition with over 250 titles to his name. David is also Carolyn’s sibling. Clearly, beautiful music making runs in their family. Carolyn also highlighted two short works in contrasting styles by New York string teacher and artist Beth Bultman.
