The winter Salon Recital was held at Allan Reiter’s home in Arlington, VA, on January 26th. Neither snow nor ice nor sleet would prevent us from gathering! Seven performers participated in nine pieces, with most members playing in more than one ensemble.

Standing: Dale Dean, Patrick Shea, Allan Reiter, Don Foy. Sitting: Mary Lewers, Laura Garawski, Carol Pew

The recital started with Mary Lewers on flute with Dale Dean accompanying her on piano for a beautiful rendition of Rachmoninoff’s Vocalise, originally written for high voice and piano. Mary was then joined by violinist Don Foy, performing a dynamic period Telemann duet. Laura Garawski played a haunting interpretation of Chopin’s Nocturne in C# Minor. Don, Laura and cellist Carol Pew then played the lively Scherzo movement from Schubert’s Piano Trio in Bb major. Mary and Carol played a Danzi duet with fun melodic interplay between the flute and cello. Patrick Shea demonstrated his repertoire range, performing three pieces ranging from Bach to Leroy Anderson’s Syncopated Clock. Carol played Bach’s Arioso, from Cantata 156, with piano accompaniment by Laura. Elgar’s iconic romantic violin piece Salut d’ Amour was performed by Don with Laura accompanying on piano. Laura and Allan Reiter closed the recital with Rachmaninoff’s whimsical Italian Polka for 2 Pianos.

The recital was a welcome musical respite in wintertime and was enhanced by Allan’s gracious hosting. Thanks to all who participated!

The next Salon recital will be Sunday, April 13th, at 2 p.m. Email cpew@amsfperform.org to join.
