AMSF presented a lovely Encore Recital on Sunday, March 15th at St. Columba’s Episcopal Church in the Tenleytown area of Washington, DC.

Yukiko Takedai, Stuart Rosenthal, Hala Tomey, Judith Block, Louis Reichwein, Kuo-Wei Wang, Simon Finlow, Eli Jacks

The church provided a beautiful Steinway in their main Sanctuary, where attendees could enjoy the wonderful acoustics of the room from their seats in the pews.

Our extensive program began with Judith Block performing Mozart’s Rondo in A minor as well as Chopin’s Nocturne in E Major — the last Nocturne Chopin published during his lifetime.

Hala Tomey followed with Mozart’s Fantasia in D Minor, a work that Mozart himself never finished, though it has long been published with endings penned by later composers. She also performed Lecuona’s La Comparsa.

Yukiko Takedai has been performing parts of Schumann’s Kreisler Iana at several recent Encore Recital programs. At this event, she performed numbers 3 and 4 of the work’s eight movements.

Scriabin’s Mazurka, Op. 3, No. 7 concluded the first half of the program, performed by Stuart Rosenthal.

After intermission, Eli Jacks continued the “mazurka” theme, playing three Mazurkas by Chopin.

Kuo-Wei Wang continued his efforts to introduce audiences to lesser-known composers, performing Bortkiewicz’s Etude in F Major as well as two preludes by Cesar Cui.

Louis Reichwein played Polish composer Szymanowski’s Etude, Op. 4, No. 3, followed by the Percy Grainger version of the American folk tune, Spoon River. Grainger was born in Australia but lived most of his life in America.

Simon Finlow closed out the program with Granados’ Allegro di Concierto, after which everyone enjoyed an especially long and festive refreshment hour in the church lobby.

Encore reticals are open to the public. All AMSF members and their friends are welcome to attend.
